Srinagar, Jul 20 (KNO): While the protests erupted in Srinagar and elsewhere over the paucity of water amidst the scorching heat in Kashmir, the authorities here have issued an appeal to the general public, urging them to use drinking water judiciously and refrain from unnecessary wastage. In an appeal to general public, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Executive Engineer, water Works Division, Srinagar has stated that due to increase in temperature in Kashmir valley, the consumption, drawls of water supply have increased considerably, resulting in shortage of water supply in some parts of Srinagar City especially in tail end areas of the city. “As such, general public is appealed to use the drinking water judiciously and avoid wastages/misuse of water by using it in Lawns, Kitchen-Gardens, washing of vehicles etc,” reads the communication. The communication states that the consumers using direct online boosters are appealed to stop this practice immediately for equitable distribution of water supply in their respective areas. "This is an offence under Jammu & Kashmir Water Resources Regulation and Management Act 2010 and the department shall be forced to take action against all such offenders", states the communication. To address grievances related to water scarcity, as per the communication, a provincial control room has been established, operating round the clock to assist with complaints and issues. Designated nodal officers have also been appointed to promptly address genuine concerns regarding water supply. When contacted, Chief Engineer, Jal Shakti Department, Vivek Kohli told KNO that the situation is not alarming, but the people have been asked to avoid wastages and also using the motors and other gadgets. About the water scarcity, he said in case the need arises, the department has kept water tankers available in order to ensure adequate water supply to the consumers. Pertinently, several areas of Kashmir witnessed protests on Friday as the people took to the streets, demanding adequate water supply, claiming that amidst the scorching heat, the people are being pushed to the wall due to inadequate water supply in their areas—(KNO)
